Implementing 5S Methodology Across Our Depot Network

Nixon Hire have begun to roll out the 5S methodology, designed to improve productivity and efficiency in the workplace.

What is 5S?

5S relates to five key principles: SORT, SET IN ORDER, SHINE, STANDARDISE and SUSTAIN.

5S is a lean management system where each step builds on the previous one - with the ultimate goal being to increase productivity while eliminating waste.

The idea is that if spaces are better organised work can be performed more efficiently, effectively and safely – achieving more consistent operational results. It focusses on putting everything where it belongs and keeping the workplace clean, which makes it easier for people to do their jobs without wasting time or risking injury.

Why are we implementing 5S?

We want to ensure that our Depots are being run at maximum efficiency so that we can provide the best possible service to our customers and improve their experience. We know that the organization and standard of every process within the Depots has a knock on effect to the quality of the products we send out on hire and the speed in which we can respond to customer requests. Whether that be how quickly we can get prepare a piece of equipment for hire and deliver it to a customer’s site or how quickly we can respond to a breakdown or additional servicing requirement for an item already on hire.

Does it also benefit employees of Nixon Hire?

Yes, another huge benefit of implementing 5S methodology is that is results in safer, cleaner, more organised and ultimately more pleasant work spaces, where staff enjoy working and have better job satisfaction. For example, decluttering and standardising work zones removes potential safety hazards and housing parts and tools in a more organised way makes them more accessible and makes it as easy as possible for people to do their jobs to the best of their ability.

What has been achieved so far?

We’re already seeing significant improvements since we have started making changes to our workplaces in line with the principles of 5S, including a reduction in breakdowns of more than 60%!

Some of the new processes and procedures already in place across our Depot network include:

  • New first aid areas & cleaning stations
  • New stock ordering portal
  • Standardisation of stores
  • Improved tool kits
  • Review of working area layouts in workshops and yards

With many more projects in the pipeline we’re looking forward to seeing how future changes across the business will result in significant benefits for our customers nationwide and for all Nixon Hire employees across our Depot network.
